Sensitive skin routine
Fewer products, gentle formulas, a stronger barrier
Sensitive skin reacts easily with stinging, burning, redness or itching, often to fragrance, heat, wind or strong actives. It usually means the skin barrier is weaker, and it can go along with conditions like rosacea or eczema. The goal is a short routine of gentle, fragrance-free products and very slow changes.
Signs of sensitive skin
- Products often sting or burn, even gentle ones
- Skin turns red easily with heat, wind, spicy food or exercise
- Itchy, tight or rough patches
- Reactions to fragrance, some sunscreens or hair dye
- Flushing that lasts longer than it used to

Morning routine
Apply products from thinnest to thickest: watery serums first, then lotions and creams, with sunscreen always last in the morning. Wait about 1 minute between layers and 1β2 minutes before sunscreen, and let skin dry fully after washing before a retinoid.

Cleanse
Fragrance-free cream cleanser or water rinse
A non-foaming, fragrance-free cream or milk cleanser cleans without disturbing the barrier. Many sensitive skins need only water in the morning.
How: Rinse with cool to lukewarm water (about 30β35 Β°C / 86β95 Β°F), or massage a pea-size amount of cream cleanser with your fingertips for 20β30 seconds and rinse. Pat dry with a soft towel; never rub.

Soothing barrier serum
A calming serum with low-strength niacinamide, panthenol or centella helps reduce redness and strengthens the barrier over 4β8 weeks.
How: Press 2β3 drops onto dry skin and wait 1 minute before moisturizer. Start every other morning for the first week; if it tingles for more than a minute or turns your skin red, stop and switch to a simpler formula.

Skip: Niacinamide above 5%, low-pH vitamin C serums and anything with fragrance or essential oils.

Moisturize
Barrier cream with ceramides
A fragrance-free cream with ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids rebuilds the barrier and shields skin from wind and cold.
How: Press an almond-size amount over face and neck with light movements and wait 2β3 minutes before sunscreen. Use the same cream morning and night to keep the number of products low.

Protect
Mineral SPF 30+ (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide)
Mineral filters are less likely to sting than some chemical filters. Tinted versions with iron oxides also hide redness and protect from visible light.
How: Apply 1/4 teaspoon (about 1.25 ml) to face and neck as the last step, 15 minutes before going out, and reapply every 2 hours outdoors or after sweating. Patch test it first, because some people react to the base cream rather than the filters.
Look forZinc oxide (often 10β25%)Titanium dioxideIron oxides (tinted)Texture: Lotion or cream; tinted if a white cast bothers you
Skip: Sunscreens with fragrance or high alcohol, and sprays near the face.

Night routine
If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using retinoids (retinol, retinal, adapalene) or high-strength salicylic acid such as peels. Azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C and mineral sunscreen are usually considered gentler choices, but check with your doctor too.

Cleanse
Gentle cleanse, with a balm first if needed
Use the same fragrance-free cream cleanser at night. For mineral sunscreen or makeup, a gentle, fragrance-free cleansing balm first removes it without rubbing.
How: Melt a small amount of balm over dry skin for 30 seconds and rinse, then wash with your cream cleanser for 20β30 seconds in lukewarm water. Pat dry and wait 10β15 minutes, until skin is fully dry, before azelaic acid.

Treat
Azelaic acid 10%, or nothing new for 2 weeks
If your skin is calm, azelaic acid 10% is a gentle active that helps redness, bumps and uneven tone. If your skin is reacting right now, skip this step and use only cleanser and moisturizer for 2 weeks so the barrier can recover.
How: Patch test first, then apply a pea-size amount to dry skin every other night for 2 weeks, and nightly after that if your skin stays comfortable. Mild tingling in the first 1β2 weeks is common; stop if it burns, swells or itches.
Look forAzelaic acid 10%Niacinamide 2β4%PanthenolTexture: Cream or light gel
Skip: Retinoids, strong acids and benzoyl peroxide until your skin has been calm for at least 4 weeks, and then only one at a time at the lowest strength, ideally with a dermatologist's advice.

Moisturize
Barrier cream (same as morning)
The same ceramide cream at night, applied a little more generously, supports repair while you sleep.
How: Apply an almond-size amount 2β3 minutes after azelaic acid, or straight after cleansing on rest nights. On very dry, irritated spots, a thin layer of plain petrolatum on top can help.

Exfoliate Β· Every 2 weeks, up to 1 time a week
PHA (gluconolactone), at most once a week
Polyhydroxy acids are larger molecules that work more slowly on the surface, so they are the gentlest acid option. Many sensitive skins do fine with no exfoliant at all.
How: Only once your skin has been calm for at least 4 weeks: apply a thin layer of a PHA 4β10% product to clean, dry skin on a night without azelaic acid, wait 2 minutes, then moisturize. Start every 2 weeks; if there is no redness after a month, you can go to once a week.

Skip: Scrubs, cleansing brushes, glycolic acid and peel pads.

Mask Β· 1 time a week
Soothing mask
A fragrance-free cream or gel mask with oatmeal, centella or panthenol calms skin after wind, heat or a reaction.
How: Apply a thick layer to clean skin for 10β15 minutes, then rinse gently with lukewarm water or pat the extra in, and moisturize. Keeping the mask in the fridge (not the freezer) adds a cooling effect.

Go easy on these
- Fragrance and essential oils (including lavender, citrus and mint) The most common causes of irritation and allergy on sensitive skin.
- Alcohol denat high on the ingredient list Dries and stings, especially on a damaged barrier.
- Retinoids, strong acids and benzoyl peroxide Often too irritating; use only with a very slow start or a dermatologist's advice.
- Grainy scrubs and cleansing brushes Friction triggers redness and irritation.
- Menthol, camphor and alcohol-based witch hazel The cooling tingle they give is a sign of irritation.
See a dermatologist if redness, flushing or stinging lasts for weeks, if you notice visible blood vessels, bumps or eye irritation (possible rosacea), or itchy rash patches (possible eczema or allergy). Get urgent care if a product makes your face, lips or eyes swell.
Tips for sensitive skin
- Use no more than 3β4 products a day, and add new ones one at a time, 2 weeks apart.
- Patch test everything new on the inner arm or behind the ear twice a day for 7β10 days.
- Wash with cool to lukewarm water and pat dry; avoid steam rooms, saunas and very hot showers.
- Protect your face from wind and cold with a scarf and a thicker layer of cream in winter.
- Keep a simple diary of products, foods, weather and stress to spot your triggers.
- Choose fragrance-free rather than unscented: unscented products can still contain a masking fragrance.
Good to know
New products: Patch test each new product on the inner arm or behind the ear twice a day for 7β10 days, and don't use it if you see redness, itching or swelling. Add only one new product at a time, about 2 weeks apart, so you know what helps and what causes a reaction.
Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days: about 1/4 teaspoon (about 1.25 ml) for face and neck. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors and right after swimming or sweating.
Pregnant or breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using retinoids (retinol, retinal, adapalene) or high-strength salicylic acid such as peels. Azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C and mineral sunscreen are usually considered gentler choices, but check with your doctor too.
Adjust your routine
General cosmetic information, not medical advice. Products are matched to each step from their ingredient lists (they contain the actives the step asks for and none of the ones to leave out); this is not a personal recommendation. Patch-test new products and stop if anything burns, swells or itches.
