Routine

Oily skin routine

Light layers that control shine without stripping

Oily skin makes more sebum, the natural oil that keeps skin supple, so it looks shiny a few hours after washing, mostly on the forehead, nose and chin. Pores often look larger and clog more easily, which can lead to blackheads and breakouts. Oily skin still needs water and moisturizer: stripping it with harsh products leaves it tight and irritated without keeping shine away for long.

Signs of oily skin
  • Your face looks shiny 2–3 hours after washing
  • Makeup slides off or separates by midday
  • Pores look larger, especially on the nose and inner cheeks
  • You get blackheads or breakouts often
  • Blotting paper picks up oil from most of your face, not only the T-zone

Morning

Morning routine

Apply products from thinnest to thickest: watery serums first, then lotions and creams, with sunscreen always last in the morning. Wait about 1 minute between layers and 1–2 minutes before sunscreen, and let skin dry fully after washing before a retinoid.

  1. Cleanse

    Gel or foaming cleanser

A gel or light foam cleanser removes overnight oil and sweat without leaving a film. A version with 0.5–2% salicylic acid helps keep pores clear if you also get blackheads.

How: Wet your face with lukewarm water (about 32–37 Β°C / 90–98 Β°F), massage a hazelnut-size amount for 30–60 seconds, rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel. If your skin feels tight afterwards, use a plain gel cleanser in the morning and keep the salicylic acid one for the evening.

Look forSalicylic acid 0.5–2% (optional)GlycerinZinc PCA

Texture: Clear gel or light foam

Skip: Bar soap, cleansers high in alcohol denat and gritty scrubs, which leave skin tight and irritated.

  2. Serum

    Niacinamide serum

Niacinamide helps balance oil, makes pores look smaller and calms redness, and it layers well under sunscreen. Vitamin C is a good extra if you also want brighter skin and more protection against sun damage.

How: Apply 3–4 drops (or 1–2 pumps) to dry skin after cleansing, press it over the whole face and wait about 1 minute before moisturizer. Niacinamide and vitamin C can be used in the same routine; if you use both, apply the vitamin C first.

    Look forNiacinamide 4–5%Zinc PCA 1%Vitamin C 10–15% (optional)

    Texture: Watery serum

Skip: Niacinamide at 10% or more if you flush or sting easily; 4–5% gives most of the benefit with less irritation.

  3. Moisturize

    Oil-free gel moisturizer

A light, oil-free gel or gel-cream adds water and keeps the barrier healthy without feeling greasy. Look for the words non-comedogenic or oil-free on the label.

How: Spread a pea-size amount over the face (a little more if you include your neck) and wait 1–2 minutes before sunscreen. In hot, humid weather a light lotion sunscreen can replace this step if your skin feels comfortable.

    Look forGlycerinHyaluronic acidNiacinamideCeramides

    Texture: Gel or water-gel

Skip: Thick creams that list mineral oil, cocoa butter or coconut oil near the top of the ingredients.

  4. Protect

    Lightweight matte SPF 30+

Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against sunburn, dark marks and early aging, and it is the most important step every morning. Fluid, gel or matte textures suit oily skin best.

How: Apply 1/4 teaspoon (about 1.25 ml) to face and neck as the last step, about 15 minutes before going out. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors and after sweating or swimming; blot oil with a tissue first so the new layer spreads evenly.

Look forBroad-spectrum SPF 30–50Zinc oxide or modern chemical filtersSilica (absorbs shine)

Texture: Fluid, gel-cream or matte lotion

Skip: Heavy, greasy body sunscreens on the face.

Night

Night routine

If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using retinoids (retinol, retinal, adapalene) or high-strength salicylic acid such as peels. Azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C and mineral sunscreen are usually considered gentler choices, but check with your doctor too.

  1. Cleanse

Double cleanse: cleansing oil or micellar water, then gel cleanser

In the evening you remove sunscreen, makeup, sweat and a full day of oil. On days you wore makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, start with micellar water or a light cleansing oil, then use your gel cleanser.

How: Massage the cleansing oil onto dry skin for 30–60 seconds and rinse (or wipe micellar water off with a cotton pad), then wash with your gel cleanser for 30–60 seconds in lukewarm water. Pat dry and let skin dry fully, about 5–10 minutes, before your treatment.

Look forEmulsifying cleansing oilSalicylic acid 0.5–2% (in the gel cleanser)Glycerin

Texture: Light cleansing oil or micellar water, then gel or foam

Skip: Washing more than twice a day or scrubbing with a rough cloth; it irritates skin without reducing oil.

  2. Treat

    Retinoid, built up slowly

A retinoid unclogs pores, smooths texture and helps prevent breakouts and fine lines. Over-the-counter options are adapalene 0.1% gel or retinol; on nights you skip it, salicylic acid (see the weekly exfoliant) keeps pores clear.

How: Start with a pea-size amount of adapalene 0.1% or retinol 0.25–0.3% on fully dry skin 2–3 nights a week (for example Monday, Wednesday and Friday): dot it on forehead, cheeks and chin, then spread thinly, staying away from eye corners, nostrils and lips. If there is no peeling or stinging after 2–3 weeks, move to every other night, then nightly. Some dryness or a few extra pimples in the first 4–6 weeks is common; judge results after 12 weeks.

    Look forAdapalene 0.1%Retinol 0.25–1%Retinal (retinaldehyde) 0.05–0.1%

Texture: Light gel, serum or lotion

Skip: Salicylic acid or other acids on the same night while you are starting, and any retinoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding (ask your doctor).

  3. Moisturize

    Light gel-cream moisturizer

A light moisturizer after your treatment reduces retinoid dryness and keeps the barrier strong, which helps oily skin stay calmer. Ceramides and niacinamide are useful here.

How: Apply a pea-to-almond-size amount 1–2 minutes after your treatment. If the retinoid stings, use the sandwich method: a thin layer of moisturizer, wait 5 minutes, then the retinoid, then moisturizer again.

    Look forCeramidesNiacinamideGlycerinSqualane

    Texture: Gel-cream or light lotion

Skip: Heavy balms all over the face; keep them for dry patches only.

Weekly

Once or twice a week

  1. Exfoliate Β· 2–3 times a week

    Salicylic acid (BHA) leave-on exfoliant

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it gets inside pores and loosens the plug of oil and dead cells that forms blackheads. A leave-on liquid or gel works better and more gently than a scrub.

How: On 2–3 nights when you do not use your retinoid (for example Tuesday and Saturday), smooth a few drops over clean, dry skin with your fingers or a cotton pad, focusing on the nose, forehead and chin; do not rinse, wait 1–2 minutes, then moisturize. New to acids? Start with 1 night a week for 2 weeks.

Look forSalicylic acid 1–2%NiacinamideGreen tea extract

Texture: Liquid toner or light gel

Skip: Using it on the same night as your retinoid; once the retinoid is nightly, give up 1–2 retinoid nights a week for BHA instead.

  2. Mask Β· 1 time a week

    Clay mask

Kaolin or bentonite clay absorbs extra oil and makes skin look less shiny for a day or so. It is a short-term helper, not a treatment.

How: Apply a thin, even layer to clean skin, avoiding the eye area, and rinse with lukewarm water after 10–15 minutes, when it starts to feel tight and before it cracks. Moisturize afterwards, and choose a night without retinoid or acid.

Look forKaolin clayBentonite clayNiacinamide or zinc (optional)

    Texture: Creamy clay paste

Skip: Leaving it on until it cracks, and masks with strong fragrance or essential oils.

Be careful with

Go easy on these

  • Heavy plant oils and butters such as coconut oil and cocoa butter Can clog pores in people who get blackheads and breakouts.
  • Toners high in alcohol denat Give a quick matte feel but dry and irritate skin without lasting oil control.
  • Harsh scrubs with crushed shells or large grains Cause tiny tears and irritation and can inflame breakouts.
  • Several strong actives on the same night A retinoid, acids and benzoyl peroxide together often cause peeling and a damaged barrier.
When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if breakouts are painful, deep or widespread, or if 3 months of over-the-counter care has not helped. Also see a doctor if sudden oiliness and acne come with irregular periods or new facial hair, which can point to a hormone imbalance.

Tips for oily skin

  • Wash your face no more than twice a day, plus after heavy sweating; washing more does not lower oil production.
  • Use blotting papers during the day instead of adding layer after layer of powder; press, don't rub.
  • Change your pillowcase 2–3 times a week and wash makeup brushes once a week.
  • Keep your hands off your face and wipe your phone screen every day.
  • Food is not the main cause of oily skin, but some studies link milk (especially skim) and high-sugar foods to more breakouts; if you suspect a link, change one thing for 4–6 weeks and watch.
  • Give any new routine 6–8 weeks before deciding it doesn't work; skin renews itself roughly every 4 weeks or longer.

Good to know

New products: Patch test each new product on the inner arm or behind the ear twice a day for 7–10 days, and don't use it if you see redness, itching or swelling. Add only one new product at a time, about 2 weeks apart, so you know what helps and what causes a reaction.

Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days: about 1/4 teaspoon (about 1.25 ml) for face and neck. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors and right after swimming or sweating.

Pregnant or breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using retinoids (retinol, retinal, adapalene) or high-strength salicylic acid such as peels. Azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C and mineral sunscreen are usually considered gentler choices, but check with your doctor too.
